Do’s and Don’ts of Citizen Lobbying
Do:
- Call to make an appointment
- Dress nicely
- Arrive on time – prepare to wait
- Introduce your self be courteous and smile
- Address them appropriately: Representative or Senator
- Make the meeting pleasant
- Cultivate a good rapport with Reps. or Senators assistants-they can be very helpful
- Stay on subject
- Be prepared to answer questions
- Always be honest; if you don’t know, say so
- Bring a copy of the bill with you
- Ask questions
- Thanks them for meeting with you and stay in touch with them on the issue
- Offer to testify on the bill
Don’t:
- Get angry
- Use offensive language or intimidation
- Criticize other legislators or parties
- Lose your credibility-this will affect anyone else who may contact them on the same subject
Things to know:
- Most public officials would like to hear their constituents concerns
- They want to be liked
- They know their legislative choices can direct your vote
Beneficial suggestions:
- Prioritize your points
- Make yourself available as a resource
- Follow up with a thank you note and ask if you could be added to their email or news letter list
